In Paperpal, we have set a 500-word limit for the Rewrite feature to help you:
1. Easily track AI-suggested changes
2. Maintain control over edits for simple output review and comparison
3. Encourage responsible use of AI by working on small sections at a time
While this limit can be helpful, we understand it may be restrictive in certain scenarios, such as:
- Improving text flow between paragraphs
- Rewriting sections based on previous context for consistency
- Polishing text using surrounding content for context
In these cases, to overcome this limitation, you can use the Write feature in Paperpal to modify or improve more than 500 words at once. This feature is particularly useful when:
- Enhancing overall document flow
- Ensuring logical consistency across sections
- Maintaining a cohesive narrative throughout your text
By utilizing the Write feature, you can work with larger portions of text while still benefiting from AI-powered assistance offered by Paperpal.
Some use cases where Write might be more useful than Rewrite:
Scenario A: You want to find connecting sentences and improve the overall flow/logic of your text.
Select your text >> go to Write >> type in your detailed requirement/custom instructions to the AI (like one of the examples)
- What are the best connecting/transition sentences that can improve the flow of my text?
- Check the selected text and improve the flow/narration of information between each sentence and between the paragraphs.
Scenario B: you want to only improve any one paragraph but using the other paragraphs as context.
- Tell me how I can improve the readability of the last paragraph based on the context of the first two paragraphs.
Scenario C: Rewriting based on very specific custom instructions.
- Rewrite the selected text such that it can be easily understood by children. Use analogies/metaphors/examples to clarify difficult-to-understand parts in the selected text.
How and where to find the Write feature on your interface (in-line--on the document and in the sidebar)
Finding Write in-line (in the document)
1. Select the text (>500 words) that you wish to rewrite.
2. Click on the Paperpal AI button in the editor.

3. A free-text box [Tell Paperpal what to write…] will appear once you click on the Paperpal AI button. In this text box, type your required instruction to the AI.
Example: paraphrase this text / rewrite this text to make it sound more academic
For best results, be detailed with your custom instruction to the AI such that the output is well-aligned with your requirement.
4. Carefully review the AI response to ensure that your requirements are fully met. You can now choose to insert the generated output, which will replace the selected text, or copy the response to paste it in your document or click on retry to have the AI generate a new output.
Finding Write in the Paperpal side bar
1. Select the text (>500 words) that you wish to rewrite.
2. In the Paperpal side bar, click on Write.

5. Type in your custom instruction in the free-text box.
6. Carefully review the output and use the output as needed with the Insert, Retry, or Copy buttons below the generated output.

Best practices for using Write to modify >500 words of text
- Be detailed and specific with your instructions to the AI. Avoid giving conflicting/opposite instructions to the AI. Keep them simple and easy to follow.
- Always carefully read and review the AI-generated outputs.
- The AI powering the Write feature cannot rewrite or modify a large text or your entire document. The AI cannot generate large outputs. It is best used to generate outputs in the range of ~500-750 words, although, rarely, it could occasionally generated outputs as large as 1000 words. (PS: these are approximate numbers)
- In your instructions, refer to the selected text as “the text” or simply do not mention the text and only provide your instruction. This is because the AI cannot “see” what is selected on your document; it only receives the selected text as input along with your instruction.
